ABOUT GAMMA LTD
Gamma Ltd are located on the Scottish Island of Islay which is famous for its peaty whisky. It is also home to offshore fish farming which has recently seen a lot of negative press for contamination of waters on the west coast of Scotland. Gamma Ltd was formed in 2020 to produce a feasibility Study funded by Innovate UK and the Scottish Government alongside academic partner the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) to explore the synergies between the whisky and salmon fishing industry with a view to minimising process waste by both and where possible reduce energy consumption and improve the environment.
The report concluded that there is indeed an opportunity to bring the offshore salmon farming onto land in large sea water tanks located adjacent existing distilleries with the building of anaerobic digestion plant adjacent both fed via used barley, diseased (dead) salmon supplemented with locally grown farm crops. Furthermore, the feed for the young salmon would be grown on land nearby with one of the important ingredients being alcohol. An off grid power and heating solution would also be possible.
PROPOSED USE OF FUNDS:
The funds would be matched by both the whisky companies on Islay and the Salmon Industry Confederation of Scotland given a total budget of £17.5M once you add on an Innovate UK grant of also £2.5M.
This would help build the demonstrator plant which would be patented with a view to then selling this globally under licence to similar nations to Scotland with both industries located adjacent each other.
